Botulinum Toxin

Botulinum toxin (type A) is a purified natural protein derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Its use in medicine dates back to 1980, when ophthalmologist Dr. Alan B. Scott employed the drug to treat strabismus. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) authorized the use of botulinum toxin in 1989 for the treatment of strabismus, blepharospasm, and hemifacial spasm in adult patients, and extended approval in 1991 to pediatric patients as well.

In 2002 in the United States and in 2004 in Italy, its use was authorized in aesthetic medicine and for the treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).
Its efficacy and safety have been documented by numerous multicenter scientific studies with large case series, dating back to the 1990s.

Botulinum toxin works by inhibiting the release of a neurotransmitter (acetylcholine) at the neuromuscular junction, blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the muscles responsible for wrinkle formation. This results in a temporary and reversible weakening or inactivation of these muscles.

It represents the cornerstone of facial rejuvenation treatments, as it is the only therapeutic agent capable of improving expression lines by targeting the underlying responsible muscles.

• Treatment of dynamic wrinkles (expression lines), for example:
  • glabellar lines (vertical lines between the eyebrows)
  • crow’s feet (around the eyes)
  • forehead lines (horizontal lines on the forehead)
  • perioral lines / “barcode” lines (around the lips)
• Lifting of drooping eyebrows (raising the outer corners of the eyes)
• Restoration of facial contour
• Subtle lifting of the nasal tip (non‑surgical nose reshaping)
• Treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) of the underarms, hands, and feet

The treatment consists of a few microinjections and is simple and quick, providing remarkable results with no downtime. The product begins to act gradually within 24 to 72 hours after injection, reaching its maximum effect after 15 days. The result is temporary and generally lasts from 4 to 6 months for expression lines, although duration may be shorter or longer depending on the individual patient.

For hyperhidrosis, the result can last from 2 to 8 months, after which an additional treatment is recommended.
